Jujutsu Kaisen hits hard and fast, no brakes on this train.
I am getting drawn in again to another Shonen and I am liking what I am seeing so far. We are battling curses which is dangerous business. The only way to battle a curse is with a curse. Yuji Itadori seems to be another student, but with absurd athletic ability. He has a mysterious past and is being raised by his grandfather. His parents are gone and out of the picture.
During the first episode his grandfather appears to be on his deathbed. He tries to give Yuji information about his parents, which Yuji tells his grandfather not to talk about things that don’t matter. The grandfather presses ahead and tells Yuji that he is strong. He also tells Yuji that he should protect others with that strength if he can, even if it’s not that many people. It’s a fairly ominous message as if the grandfather can anticipate the struggles to come. And before Yuji gets a chance to really process what his grandfather means, his grandfather dies in the same scene. It’s heartbreaking to watch.
However there are curses that need to be dealt with. While Yuji is dealing with the death of his grandfather he is confronted by a Sorcerer. The Sorcerer is responsible for securing and eliminating curses when and where they appear. And in the background of the first episode the Sorcerer has been tracking an extremely dangerous curse that was on the school grounds of Yuji’s school. When Yuji reveals that his friends in the occult club have the cursed item, the Sorcerer immediately goes to retrieve the cursed item before it causes any issues.
As it turns out there is an attack by a curse on the friends of Yuji, who were both members in the occult club. The attack threatens their lives and damages school property. The Sorcerer sent to deal with the curse gets overwhelmed by the power of the curse he is facing. Yuji, despite having no training, helps the sorcerer fight off the curse. Yuji consumes the cursed finger that the occult members had to save the occult members’ lives. Yuji successfully defeats the curse.
But there are consequences for Yuji having consumed the cursed finger. He is scheduled to be executed by the Sorcerers who are responsible for fighting curses. But instead of immediate execution, his execution is stayed if he can consume all the cursed fingers.
I am not sure where this ride is going to take me. The premise is interesting. All I know is that absurd action is up ahead, and I know that I am going to love every second. If you are into heart pounding action, with awesome characters, then this is the show for you.
