How do I decide what Anime I want to Watch?

What makes an anime worth watching?

Every season there are plenty of new anime to choose from. There is usually something for everyone’s preferences. But narrowing down a list from what is out there is hard. It’s an even bigger decision when you are looking at the anime of the past as well. Removing the anime that isn’t worth watching is fairly essential, unless you are happy with anything. In which case this post isn’t for you. You keep doing you. For those who want to spend their time engaging with anime on a story development, character development, or world development angle there is a lot to consider.

If you read the description of the anime there is generally limited information there to make a decision. It might give you enough of an idea to know up front if something isn’t for you. If the description seems out of this world, the story is probably too complicated to be compelling. Not that complex elements should be a turn off, but a good story will take its time getting you introduced into the rules of that world. There is only so much the mind can digest before immersion is broken. Remember when you can no longer suspend disbelief you might as well be drunk to enjoy it.

Guess what? It’s okay to drop an anime after a few minutes if it’s clearly not for you.

Fortunately you have the help of the internet to see if something is loved or not. If the description can’t help you decide, then you can google something to see if it’s a good fit for you. There are plenty of blogs and media outlets writing about what you want to watch. The trick is to find your spirit animal in terms of a writer who resonates with your general ideas and beliefs about what is good to watch. I am not saying you need to resonate 100% of the time, but the suggestions need to make sense often enough. A good writer can be your guide through deep waters.

Friends can also be a good source of deciding what to watch. They will have their favorite things that they want to watch, and you both are friends for a reason. Chances are high that you might be into what they are into. Again your interests don’t need to align always. Sometimes there are things that friends love that you may not. There are always differences in preference no matter how close of friends you may be. This doesn’t mean one friend is right and the other is wrong. It’s just a matter of what you enjoy. It’s okay to enjoy your own thing.

At the end of the day if all else fails trust your intuition. You are going to be right more often than you are wrong. And if you are wrong it’s okay to have a good laugh and move on. There is no rule that says you have to complete a bad series. You don’t have to watch all of a series to completely understand it. Sometimes like a bad book you just need to put it down and move onto the next thing. Never spend more time than necessary on something that doesn’t make sense for you to keep watching. When you know you know. Move on and keep enjoying yourself.

Do you agree? What are your thoughts? I want to know!

Is there anything you would like me to cover? Do you want to know my thoughts on anything? Have something I should know? If you answered yes to any of the previous questions, comment below!

  1. I hate dropping shows because you never know if things will change. There’s been some series that I put on hold after one episode because the first episode wasn’t that strong only for the second to blow me away when I did come back to it.

I also like to go into shows pretty much blind as it helps to reduce the chance of developing unrealistic expectations. I like being surprised and there have been several shows recently that did that. I tend to look at the promo image and that’s about it. Sometimes, I will end up watching a terrible series, but it’s worth it for the times that I find something that I fall in love with.

    1. That reminds me a lot of someone I know in my personal life. I did actually write this post because I was frustrated with that style of choosing. I suppose I am less loose with my choices. Its too chaotic for my liking.

But you know sometimes they have found great things to watch. Your point stands.

      1. As with pretty much anything, whatever works for you works for you. We’re all different so it stands to reason that we’d do things differently. There’s no right or wrong way to do things.

I have also seen some really bad shows, but that’s the risk versus the reward of taking a punt.

      2. So recently the absolute worst shows have been Plunderer and Shironeko and possibly Gibiate.

The best or most enjoyable have been Bofuri, Princess Connect, and Gleipnir.

My biggest issue is if I start covering a series on my blog I will never back out. So I sat through 24 episodes of Plunderer and if I wasn’t doing posts I would have dropped it after 3 episodes, so there’s a chance I hate it more because of that. It is my lowest rated series of all time.

      3. At least I wasn’t the only one who didn’t like Plunderer. I dropped it very quickly.

I will have to check out the others. I had heard good things about Gleipnir but haven’t had the chance to watch it.

  2. Story’s and character developments are the reasons a lot of people are picky these day’s. Before stories seemed like fantasy but now a lot of studios are following the same trends to leech of others ideas.
